Children's Literature

A mother ghost tucks her baby ghostling into bed for this unusual bedtime book. While little children want their mothers to assure them that scary monsters and ghosts are not real, this little ghostling's mother wishes him sweet dreams of those scary monsters. The mother is soothing the little ghostling in a lullaby fashion and offers to turn on the dark. Laughter, songs, and a little boy with "pink toes, blue eyes, and golden hair" frighten the little ghostling's dreams. Momma Ghost assures the baby ghostling that the children are make-believe and that ghouls, owls, and banshees will comfort him. This story is told in rhyme and is very soothing. The mention of owls, wild monsters, and ghouls is not frightening because the illustrations depict very friendly ghosts, happy monsters, and even a cute stuffed Mr. Bones that comforts the baby ghostling. For children that are frightened by nighttime monsters, this book playfully shows a baby ghostling being afraid of little children. This is a charming little bedtime story to share with young children who will be enchanted by the friendly nighttime monsters. Reviewer: Marcie Flinchum Atkins
