Annie and her bunny, Snowball, like to grow flowers in Annie's backyard. Annie also loves to play outside with her cousinand best friend, Henry, and his big dog, Mudge. One day Annie and Henry are excited to see a hummingbird in Annie's yard. Can Annie and Henry figure out a way to get more hummingbirds to come to Annie's garden?

Children's Literature

Annie and her cousin Henry live next door to each other, and they are good friends. Annie loves to garden and her garden is filled with beautiful flowers. Mudge, Henry's big dog, is warned to be careful not to crush the flowers, while Snowball, Annie's cat, plays hide and seek among the rose bushes. One day, Annie and Henry see a beautiful humming bird drinking from a petunia. It is such an exquisite sight that they want to be able to attract more humming birds, but they do not know how. Consultation with Henry's dad leads to the addition of pink items to the garden, but it is really the nectar in the petunias that draws more hummingbirds. The two spend a whole morning watching the hummingbirds. It is a very low-key story, but one that will appeal to kids who are quieter and more contemplative. This is a level 2 book in the "Ready-To-Read" series. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
