Introduces natural and man-made landmarks from different parts of the world, including the pyramids of Egypt and Ayers Rock in Australia.
In this is work of nonfiction for beginning readers, examples of landmarks from around the world are explained and shown in beautiful photographs. The most impressive feature is the highlighting of each country on a map on the page that describes the landmark, with the pronunciation of the name of that country spelled phonetically. Australia is spelled "OSS-tray-lee-ah," which does not quite work. The Taj Mahal is also given phonetic treatment, but Giza (the site of the largest pyramid in Egypt) is not. There is no explanation of the organization of the book: the text jumps back and forth between continents. This is a very brief overview of ten of the world's most famous sites, written at a level appropriate for young readers. An index gives the names of some of the landmarks, some of the cities, and all of the continents shown. Web sites for many (but not all) of the landmarks are given, and the bibliographic information includes three resource books. 2002, Blackbirch Press/The Gale Group,
