Originally published in 1906, this biography is upon letters written by the novelist and covering practically the whole period of his literary career. Whenever it has been possible to find authentic utterances, the author has endeavored to let Charles Lever speak for himself.
Charles Lever's vivid and rollicking pictures of military and hunting life were quite popular in his day, and remain a delight to read. Once compared favorably to Dickens and extremely popular in the 1840's and 1850's, Lever's reputation suffered increasing criticism in the late 19th century and he is not well known today, and is sometimes in fact referred to as "The Lost Victorian."
Lever was educated at Trinity College, Dublin, and contributed much of his early work to the "Dublin University Magazine."
