I first encountered Sarah Orne Jewett's short stories back in the sixties. I fell in love with her writing immediately. I just got through reading Marcel Proust's Pleasures and Days which reminded me of the stories I read by Jewett all those many years ago. I was delighted to find many of her books on Project Gutenberg.
Old Friends and New is a gentle book filled with wonderful stories about New England during the 1870s. Jewett evokes the people and the landscapes with such clarity and life in words that reminds one when people were kinder and more thoughtful about others. The stories are filled with the better aspects of mankind. Living in an age where kindness is considered a weakness, it surely soothes my soul to read these gentle stories in Old Friends and New. This is a book I highly recommend and will hold dear to my heart forever.
