Summary: Robert Rushton is a handsome, well-liked young boy whose father went missing at sea two years ago. To support his mother, Robert went to work at the village factory. Robert earns the enmity of his fellow classmate, Halbert Davis, son of the well-to-do factory owner. Halbert makes his father fire Robert because Halbert is jealous of the attention a girl gives Robert instead of him. Robert is sad to lose his job because he has to support his mother. He is very industrious and tries several odd jobs. He helps a older man when the man's nephew robs him of his hard earned money. Robert saves a whole train full of passengers from derailing when he stops the train from running into a boulder on the tracks. The passengers are so grateful they pool together money. Robert uses this money to go find his father. His father isn't dead, but in a mental stupor in India. Mr. Davis (Halbert's father) was put in trust of $5,000 that Mr. Rushton (Robert's father) gave him to take care of the little family if anything should happen to him. Mr. Davis invested the money poorly and won't give it back to the family. Robert finds his father, brings him home (he miraculously heals when he sees his father) gets his money back from Mr. Davis, becomes the heir of a large fortune from the older gentleman he tried to save from getting robbed. Mr. Davis loses his fortune, abandons his family and Halbert becomes the working boy and Robert is the rich one. All is well that ends well!
Response: I know that Horatio Alger's books will never win any awards and they are very didactic, but I found this book to be quite charming. Turn of the century novels are so black and white, I love it. You don't have to wonder, who is the bad guy. Good looks automatically good moral character. The bad people are always ugly. It was a sweet, impossible, funny book. They are fun adventure stories where the boy hero always gets his just rewards and he helps out deserving people along the way. Reminiscent of A Little Princess , Little Lord Fauntleroy or even Tarzan . I can see why they were so popular, considering the time period. Great time piece and super fun, easy read.
