يتناول هذا الكتاب قضايا تقع ÙÙŠ النطاق المشترك بين تاريخ ÙˆÙلسÙØ© العلوم، ويهد٠إلى إظهار وجود رابط متين بين العلم والÙلسÙØ© باستخدام المدرسة الكوبرنيكية والداروينية والÙرويدية كمدارس علمية. ثمة روابط عديدة تجمع بين كوبرنيكوس وداروين ÙˆÙرويد أكثر من مساهماتهم ÙÙŠ استكمال الثورة التي Ø£Øدثها كوبرنيكوس. وتÙبيÙّن دراسة الكوبرنيكية والداروينية والÙرويدية أن المناهج العلمية لدراسة العالم تؤدي على Ù†ØÙˆ طبيعي ÙˆØتمي إلى نتائج ÙلسÙية.
رأى Ùرويد أن الأÙكار العلمية تÙغيÙّر طريقة تÙكيرنا بشأن العالم؛ Ùقد Ø£Ø²Ø§Ø ÙƒÙˆØ¨Ø±Ù†ÙŠÙƒÙˆØ³ ' من خلال نظرية مركزية الشمس ' البشر من المركز المادي للكون (١٥٤٣). ووضع داروين ' من خلال نظرية النشوء والارتقاء ' البشر ÙÙŠ وضعهم الطبيعي بين الكائنات (١٨٥٩). ويرى Ùرويد أن كوبرنيكوس وداروين سدَّدا ضربات قاسية للصورة التي ÙŠÙخر بها البشر بوصÙهم سادة الكون. ورأى Ùرويد أنه يكمل دائرة تصØÙŠØ Ù‡Ø°Ù‡ الصورة من خلال تدمير الاعتقاد بأن البشر «مسيطرون على أنÙسهم» (١٩١٦).
