Simple text and pictures explain the how, why, where, and when of sharing friendship.
This "You and Me" entry in the "Read and Learn" series defines friendship and opens a dialog with children about how we make friends. Children are shown making friends at school, playing, helping each other, or being companionable at the lunchroom table. The book also makes the point that adults, community service workers, and others can also be our friends. Each includes a bold type question, such as "What Do You Hear When You Make Friends?" and the text suggests ideas. While a few of the pictures look posed and stiff, the worthwhile text introduces many avenues for preschool and kindergarteners to talk about their own friendships and to explore ways to widen their circle happily. Photographs in this series include a wonderful diversity of people. An ending quiz, a picture glossary, and a small index help readers become familiar with nonfiction text and some of its conventions. In addition, the layout of the text encourages new readers to tackle the books in this nicely done series with real success. 2004, Heinemann Library, Ages 3 to 6.
