Toronto: A Pictorial Celebration Book

Before he became a writer, Rulfo took photographs, as an amateur, as he traveled for a couple of jobs he had. Years later, they curated out of the 6,000 negatives he had on hand for a show.
From the '40's and '50's, he captures a world already disappearing. Peasant life, ancient runes. He is not a mere documentarian, there is soul in his photos as well. The light, the shadows, the sense of depth and perspective. He knew how to photograph - front, middle and back highlights in almost all of his photos.
He was very interested in architecture, with pages upon pages of writing on the history of it in Mexico. It shows in these photos, some of which may have been used if the book had ever been completed, and published.
This collection is stunning. I have not thumbed through a collection of photographs in years, and I was just overwhelmed by the photos included here.
The collection starts out with 6 essays - the first (Carlos Fuentes) and last (Erika Billeter - giving some background to their province) are the best. The other 4 rather blather on about abstract ideas, and try to tie his writing and his photos together, and never really get there.
Amazingly this book was overstocked at one time - mine has the black mark on the bottom of the pages. I paid about $100 for mine - it now goes for $375-400 on amazon! There are other collections of his photos - some for much less, some for much more.
