This translation presents a selection from Hippolyte Taine's 1877 history of the causes, events, and consequences of the French Revolution. The introduction (by Mona Ozouf) is reprinted from A Critical Dictionary of the French Revolution (Harvard U. Press, 1989). The translation conveys well Taine's highly descriptive and philosophical style: he believed that history could be studied scientifically and that people acted according to set principles. This set will be of use to historiographers and those interested in an epic period of history. Annotation c. Book News, Inc.,Portland, OR
