The Memoirs of John F. Kennedy: A Novel brings to life the tantalizing possibilities of "what might have been" had JFK remained president after November 22, 1963. This novel interweaves a two-track story. One takes place in 1963 at Parkland Medical Center and follows Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy, Jackie Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson and J. Edgar Hoover as they cope with the explosive events of the assassination attempt while the wounded president hovers near death.
The other more lighthearted fictional story-line unfolds through the eyes of Patrick Hennessey, the memoirist appointed by JFK during the approaching end of his second term in 1968. Through in-depth talks at the White House, Camp David, Hyannisport, on Air Force One, and golfing on Kennedy's private course at Glen Ora, Patrick gets to know the president as he reviews his decisions regarding the difficult path toward a peaceful resolution of world crises.
This well researched alternate history will strike a chord with readers worldwide-those fascinated with the Kennedy mystique and those interested in the potential for politics to be "done right" during challenging times. Considering the current period-and the 50th anniversary of JFK's election-re-imagining a more positive past may enable us to collectively envision a more enlightened future.

The Memoirs of John F. Kennedy: A Novel
I enjoyed this, considering I don't have much background on the controversy of Kennedy's assassination. The premise of the book is that Kennedy survives the shooting in Dallas and carries on with his comparatively passive agenda. The book does not really get into the altertantive scenario as to what could actually happen if Kennedy lived. What is reviewed at length is Kennedy's stance on the big issues: Bay of Pigs, Cuban Missles, Kruschev, Vietnam. Kennedy reviews these, and other main points, with Patrick Hennesy who has been hired to write the president's memoirs. The undertone is that the US, under Kennedy's guide, would NOT have sent ground troops into Vietnam. Again the book doesn't go there, just sets the tone with Kennedy's intentions on the issue.
Through alternating chapters, the book creates vivid detail of the Kennedy family dealing with Jack's recovery in a Dallas hospital. It is mostly Jackie and Bobby; with a brief appearance from Joe, unable to contribute much dialogue because of his stroke.
Then of course the conspiracy of larger involvement of participants and benefactors of Kennedy's assassination. This doesn't get into the pysics of the magic bullet, and who was standing where on the grassy noll. It is more of an account of who (both in the US and in enemy countries) had the means, the benefits and the power to pull off such an assassination attempt.
Also, a couple entertaining chapters on the president's competitiveness and big game talk on the golf course.
A greatly detailed account of the times. It's a good thing the author labels "A NOVEL" at the header of each page. I could get carried away -- taking such good details as the truth.
