Between the train ride South to Pensacola, Florida for Naval Aviation Flight training to retirement from the Marine Corps as a Lieutenant Colonel twenty years later, Neil experiences a career mixed with adventure, humor and danger.

His dive bombing destroys an important, heavily defended bridge in North Vietnam, a major part of the supply line to the Ho Chi Minh Trail, but his aircraft is hit with anti-aircraft fire. He flies twenty-five miles on fire to reach the Gulf of Tonkin and ejects when the cockpit becomes and inferno.
