THOMAS McILWORTH/COLONIAL NEW YORK PORTRAIT PAINTER traces the work of an early 18th century limner who recorded and painted the portraits of major players of the New York Province in the 1757 - 1767 period. He was of Scottish heritage. His clients were the Van Rensellaers, Van Cortlandts, Livingstons, Sir William Johnson, General John Bradstreet of French and Indian War fame (the only known portrait of this gentleman,now in the National Gallery in Washington D.C.)signers of the Declaration of Independence,along with other political and mercantile elite of the day.
