Hawai'i's waters are home to hundreds of beautiful, colorful, strange, and wonderful fish—from the Raccoon Bufferflyfish that has a false eye by its tail to the Fantail Filefish that can swim backwards. How can anyone remember their names let alone be able to identify them while snorkeling?

Now you can, Presented in Know Your Fishes Hawai'i are over forty of Hawai'i's most unique and interesting fish drawn by local artist and avid fisherman Wilfred Toki. He created the drawings in this book after his grandson started asking numerous questions about the different fishes they saw while out fishing or snorkeling. Each fish is drawn in a fun and funny way to help you remember their names. Picture the Surgeonfish wearing a surgeon's mask and holding scalpels; picture the Rudderfish with a wooden rudder for a tail and you'll be able 4 to remember their names (both their Hawaiian and English names) the next time you're out witnessing Hawai'i's underwater world.

There's so much to learn about all the fishes out there! Each drawing is accompanied by a photograph, short description and interesting fact. You'll find out what they look like, where they get their names, how they act, what they eat, and more. And you'll learn which ones played an important cultural role in ancient Hawai'i. Have fun as you get to know your fishes in Hawai'i!

About the Author

Wilfred Toki was born in a small plantation camp in Mokule'ia. His childhood was spent in the Waialua area playing in streams, picking wild fruit, swimming, and fishing in the ocean. Years later, as a grandfather, Toki revisited the wonders of his youth and created this and many other stories about Hawai'i andhis special bond with the sea creatures he often dived to see. As an artist, Toki has had a long, successful career. He continues to paint and draw and is currently sculpting, by hand, stone poi pounders, bowls, and sinkers. His work can be seen in art galleries around town.
