This catalog is published in conjunction with a 2005-2006 exhibition originating at the Skirball Cultural Center, Los Angeles—the first major exhibition in the US devoted to German painter Max Liebermann (1847-1935), who has been virtually unknown to the American public although his reputation is strong in the international art world. He was "...the premier artist in Berlin from the mid-1880s until the Nazi takeover in 1933, when his achievements were vilified and erased"—(from the foreword). His paintings are presented along with four in- depth essays that explore his life and work and the politics of painting in Germany, in particular, as a Jew. A detailed four-column chronology tracks the years 1847 through 1935 in terms of Liebermann's life and significant events in art and culture in Europe, in Jewish history, and in politics and science.
