In this new book of poems, Uncommon Geography (Carpenter Gothic, 2006), Therése Halscheid chronicles recent travels beginning with a stay in a log cabin in the secluded pine barrens of New Jersey, then moving to sacred environments as far as New Mexico, as well as other unusual settings where she has been house-sitting, such as a primeval swamp in the Pan Handle, Florida, and an elk farm in central Pennsylvania. For the past decade, the author has been house-sitting - caring for others' homes - while traveling widely to write. This mobility, along with simple living, has helped her to sustain her writing life. The poetry in this collection resonates with the voice of one who has sought and made connections across varied terrain, both spiritual and physical. Poems that teach us about the earth and the writer, as if the journey outward reflects an inner exploration, the landscape of the interior self.
