This is a very readable journal of the Holmes' family hunt for this famous lost mine. The father-son combination spent time with Jacob Waltz, shortly before he died and gained the secrets to the Dutchman's mine but were never able to find the exact location of the mine. It was their undying faith in the mine that caused father, son and grandson to spent most of the rest of their lives in an intense search for the mine. This journal is their story.
The Holmes Manuscript is the only surviving account of any of the pioneer families originally involved with Jacob Waltz (the "Lost Dutchman") and his gold. Here unfolds for the first time the original story of Jacob Waltz and the Lost Dutchman Mine, accompanied by original Homes' family photographs.
The Manuscript was discovered uncataloged in the vaults of the Arizona State Library in the early 1970's among the private papers of an early newspaperman. The question became: Is this the genuine lost manuscript of the Holmes family? After all, George "Brownie" Holmes - the apparent author - disclaimed any and all association with it.
Was Brownie telling the truth? Or, was he trying to confuse others who searched for the mine? Through a decade of research in archives and private libraries, supported by interviews with Brownie's surviving family, the author has authenticated the manuscript. It has been annotated and indexed.
This is the second of two book series on the mine: The Lost Dutchman Mine of Jacob Waltz. This volume is cross referenced to Part 1, The Golden Dream, and to the Hikers Guide to the Superstition Wilderness.

Lost Dutchman Mine of Jacob Waltz
Considering I've never been big on educational books, I have to admit this one wasn't bad. I've never really read any of the "Bathroom Reader" series, but the ones I have read I thought were pretty decent. I must say, I was quite surprised to find that there was a Bathroom reader book about Michigan. I am even more surprised about some of the things I read in said book. There was a lot I didn't know before I read this book. On top of that, this book is good for many different age frames, because it has lots of word searches and stuff like that for various ages. If there was anything I really didn't like about this book, it's that it did get kind of boring to read in certain topics, and I think the book could have been organized a little differently. At times, it does seem like the book is really written in a totally random order, Like, instead of writing the book by topic, it just writes in random order. The ONLY other thing I didn't like was that the book would split certain stories in parts. Like, for example, "The Best Business Deal in History" was split up into three parts of the book, and I personally don't think it needed to be split up like that. On a positive note, most of the stories and games and such were generally only a page or two long, so it was a very easy read and I would recommend it to anyone who wants to learn a thing or two about the interesting state of Michigan.
