Understanding the riots Book

Denikin provides an intimate look at bourgeois life in Russia at the fin de siecle. I can see why many histories of Russia quote this and other writings by him. At heart though it makes for a fine leadership study. How he faced and handled success and failure in his life leaps off the page. His dealings with good and bad commanders and subordinates create thought provoking situations for almost anyone. He writes well, but for me it seemed like a slow read. A lot of credit is due to Margaret Patoski, his translator. She fills in many arcane references and comments in the footnotes and provides mini-bios on many of the main players.
