Lawrie Siggs was one of that brilliant group of cartoonists who emerged after the last war (with names like Siggs, Starke, Searle and Sprod, they were destined to be humorists). His cartoons enlivened the pages of Punch for the next thirty-five years. They were based on his perceptive observation of everyday life and the foibles of people we know and recognise. He had the unique ability to look at familiar situations and, by giving then an unfamiliar twist, transform them into cartoons that are both funny and profound. A dedicated family man, he lived in Hornchurch, Essex, for most of his married life, and is survived by his wife, daughter, four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Promise Me You Won't Laugh is an anthology of some of Siggs' best work. With a foreword by Kenneth Mahood
