A simple-to-follow guide for beginners; a thorough reference for experienced herbalists. Mary Carse taught courses in herbalism for over a quarter of a century, writing and rewriting this book as the text. It is arranged as "Lessons", with review questions, to promote full understanding of the subject material. Now available in its second edition, Herbs of the Earth is recognized by herbalists everywhere as a classic in its field, combining ancient wisdom with modern research.

About the Author
Mary Carse, a registered member of the National Institute of Medicinal Herbs (Great Britain), has spent years helping others help themselves. This book is an outgrowth of that work. Mary has suggestions for various common ailments, especially those of women and children. Her garden and the Vermont countryside are the source of many useful herbs.

Library Journal

Another in the field of complementary health care devoted to herbal remedies, this book provides the general reader with an overview of botanical families, directions for herbal preparations, and descriptions of herbs and ailments. Designed as a self-teaching text and handbook, the guide, at times confusing to use, combines formats, with a dictionary arrangement and chapter lessons followed by review questions. Most of the information on herbs may be found elsewhere. Similar in scope to the first part of Neville and Susan Drury's The Illustrated Dictionary of Natural Therapy ( LJ 5/1/89), the guide's best feature is that it allows the reader to approach the study of herbalism from a botanical or medical viewpoint.-- Marilyn Rosenthal, Nassau Community Coll. Lib., Garden City, N.Y.
