Among treasure troves of Mexican art in Tonala, Tlquepaque, Guadlaajara, Mexico City and Madrid were the naguales and other fantastic creatures in various media which piqued my curiosity and prompted me to write this book. On field trips to Tonala and other potting villages over a period of sixteen years, a number of potters helped me in defining these illusory creatures that help and haunt their lives.
