This book provides an accurate, up-to-date checklist of common and scientific names for all
described and taxonomically valid fish species living in fresh and marine waters of North
America north of Mexico. The maximum depth for included marine species represents the
average depth limits for the outer edge of the continental shelf.
The checklist also provides stability to common names of fishes. The latest (5th) edition of this
standard reference contains 160 additional species and reflects some 400 taxonomic changes that
have occurred since 1980.
This book includes: 2428 species, 198 families, exotic fishes, 11 hybrid fishes, the rationale and
the methodology for common name allocation, history of changes from previous editions, and
extensive references. This book is intended for fish biologists and students.
