In this text, the second edition of a book first published in 1991, readers find essays by and about Stuff Smith, as well as interviews with the prolific musician. Violinist, leader, and composer Smith first recorded with Alphonso Trent in the 1920's before rising to fame in New York with his Onyx Club Boys in the 1930's. He went on to record with Nat King Cole, Duke Ellington, Sarah Vaughan, Herb Ellis, Dizzy Gillespie, Ella Fitzgerald, Sun Ra, and many more. Editor and musician Anthony Barnett is the author of POEM ABOUT MUSIC (Providence, RI, 1974). He serves as editor to Fable Bulletin: Violin Improvisation Studies, and is a contributor to the second editions of New Grove Dictionary of Music & Musicians and of Jazz.
