Trailrunner's Guide
"Led me to my #1 Favorite Trail Run!"
Yes, this book is dated (my edition was 2003), but much of the trail discussions still apply. TRAIL RUNNER'S GUIDE divides the Bay Area into 4 sections: SF, East Bay, Peninsula, and Marin. There is a separate "Locator Map" for each section. I found this helpful to locate trails of special interest to me.
Although I live in the East Bay, I was especially interested in the "Peninsula" section. The air quality is so much better there!
Each recommended trail run has a brief intro to the area, directions to the trail, and step-by-step turns. Mileage is also given, of course. Some of the trails feature "alternate routes," which usually means increasing the run.
In the Peninsula section, I was delighted to discover a great trail run for "Windy Hill." I was looking for something a bit longer than just an hour run, and this trail was perfect. I just ran this 10.0 mile run a few days ago, and it was fantastic! I started off on "Hamm's Gulch" turned left on "Lost Trail," then came back on "Razorback Ridge." What a run!
Yes, the photos are just B&W, and some of the maps are tough to read, but I still found the trail discussions helpful.
