Dr. Winter brings order to our understanding of nutrition, exercise, and how these factors work together in health and illness. Many diseases-cancer, heart attack, and stroke, for example-are discussed in detail. It is not a fad book-just pure facts and good sense.
These days, it is hard to find a nutrition book that isn't pushing some faddish philosophy. Winter attempts to debunk the controversial theories, fads, myths, and hype that have become commonplace and, worse, are now generally accepted. He covers protein, fats, carbohydrates, sugar, vitamins, minerals, exercise, and interactions. His research is drawn from well-respected sources: the Journal of the American Medical Association , New England Journal of Medicine , and more. The historical background that he gives, for example, in the discussions of vitamins, is fascinating; aside from the nutritional information, the history makes the book worthwhile. Recommended.-- Carol Spielman Lezak, General Learning Corp., Northbrook, Ill.
