Inanna: From the Myths of Ancient Summer
Collection of lightly-edited poems relating to Inanna, whom Wikipedia impressively describes as the "Mesopotamian goddess associated with love, beauty, sex, desire, fertility, war, justice, and political power". Many of the poems are attributed to High Priestess Enheduanna (or, if your computer has Unicode for Sumerian cuneiform: 𒂗𒃶𒌌ð’€ð’ˆ¾ ) the earliest poet whom we know by name.
I've been kind of on a Sumerian kick following Snow Crash , and this was some enjoyable mythology. Fascinating in the way all truly ancient tales are, and the Mesopotamians really seemed to be a bit more risqué than their Hellenic counterparts.
Wasn't a huge fan of the illustrations by Linda Wolfsgruber, but they did convey a certain rawness that matched the tales quite well.
