Christopher Lloyd (1921-2006) was one of the twentieth century's most influential and adventurous ardeners. I love all of Lloyd's books I read. He was so opinionated and truly knowledgeable and viciously witty. This one is only partially written by him, but it represents well his gardening philosophy (although I'd always go back to the Well-tempered Garden for real practical information). This is the first book from him I ever read (a present) and completely changed the way I see gardening, and colour in gardening. Lloyd was just so flamboyantly daring, and never more so than in the exotic garden, perhaps. I don't have the facilities or the man-power to follow the greatest part of his advice, and I am as a rule more interested in herbs and edibles than ornamental, and yet this book managed to inoculate me with a tremendous zest for pushing the limits (of climate, of my own tastes, of conventions), getting out of my comfort zone, trying something new, look at the usual plants in a different way. Many of his ideas for an exotic look in the garden can be made to work also with hardy plants and annuals, so I think the book is a valuable addition to any gardener's bookshelf, even if most of us will have to adapt the inspirations provided to more limited means.
