The quiet crisis and the next generation
This history of land management (or mis-management) was already a classic when I read it a number of years ago. Having a soils` scientist for a father probably had something to do with my wanting to be 'in on the conversation', as it were. There's a veritable parade of Who's Who of American History making cameo appearances and taking main roles as Udall unrolls this panoramic history before us -- Thomas Jefferson, Daniel Boone, Thoreau, John Wesley Powell, John Muir, Teddy Roosevelt, to name a few. And then there's the genius George Perkins Marsh (who, incidentally,learned 20 languages fluently by age 30, Carl Shurz, Pinchot, who played signature roles. With the advent of this book the term "ecology" became a household word.
