Written by noted authority Arnold Goldstein and gang expert Donald Kodluboy, this book is an essential resource for educators and administrators who are concerned with gang presence or the possibility of gang presence in their schools and communities.
Traditionally, schools have been "neutral turf" and exempt from the crime, vandalism, and violence that accompanies gang activity. This is no longer true-the past decade has seen a steady increase in gang-related activities in and around schools. To combat this, authors Goldstein and Kodluboy have produced an outstanding resource for teachers and school administrators. Part one of the book provides an overview of the origin and nature of gangs. Included in this section are discussions of the social and economic situations that give birth to gangs, the different types of gangs, the culture of gangs, and the various criminal and anti-social activities in which gangs engage. Photographs of gang hand signs, graffiti, and tattoos enhance this section. Part two discusses effective interventions for deterring gang activity and preventing youth involvement in gangs. School staff can use this resource to educate themselves about the signs of growing gang activity in their school. Schools wanting to implement interventions against gang activity can use it as an overview of the best practices available. From there schools would need to pursue more detailed information, as this title discusses intervention but does not provide enough detail to implement it. Although intended for school administrators and teachers, Gangs in Schools will appeal to the more socially-minded young adult reader, and would also make a fine reference for student research. Index. Photos. Maps. Charts. Biblio.
