Minnesota's Past
While preparing for an imminent move to Minnesota, I acquired a few introductory texts on the state's history including Rhoda Gilman's The Story of Minnesota's Past. I was unaware when purchasing the book that its primary purpose is as an instructional aid for teaching Minnesota history at the middle school level. While some of the language and concepts may have been a little simplistic, I still enjoyed the book and learned a great deal about Minnesota in the process. The numerous photos and maps are a particular asset, as are the short profiles of important historical figures. The work is unfortunately somewhat dated and there is relatively little study of the post-war period. All in all, The Story of Minnesota's Past is a fine introduction to Minnesota history and has introduced many avenues for further study.
