The Business of Captivity in the Chemung Valley: Elmira and Its Civil War Prison
This book takes a different approach from most books about Civil War prisons. Instead of focusing entirely on the lives of the prisoners and the problems they encountered, this one examines the path of the money involved with the building and operation of the facility. Even the founding of the prison was possibly based on money, since it was built by converting a training center that was only located in Elmira because the Secretary of War had an interest in one of the railroads leading there.
While a bit dry, the book was no more so that many history books that have to focus on facts and numbers, rather than entertaining stories. If you want to learn about the hard facts of running a prison during the Civil War, and the odd causes that led to the high death rate at Elmira, this book has some fascinating material.
