Although the most common feature in the Homeric poems is repetition, few agree about how to interpret it. In this work, Steven Lowenstam examines both the Iliad and the Odyssey in order to understand how Homer used diction. In an effort to resolve the popular debate concerning the relative importance of form and meaning, Lowenstam suggests that the formulas of the Homeric tradition were modified to allow the greatest harmony of style and nuance.
