The book contains black-and-white illustrations.
Clearly a labor of love, this compilation is more than a simple listing of sites relevant to the African American experience in each state (which alone would be of value). Arranged in five sections according to region (and within each region, by state), each section begins with a narrative discussing Black history and experience in that region. Sites are thoroughly described for their history and significance, and the practicalities of visiting them (e.g. address, telephone, visiting hours) are included. Curtis's clear black & white photos of many sites enhance the text admirably (more photos in future editions of this guide would be welcomed). Each state has its own bibliography of works consulted.
