Christy Oestreich - Children's Literature

New Mexico is a great place to learn more about the history and lifestyle of the Native Americans. The state was originally part of Mexico and other surrounding states, then it became a more defined territory and eventually became known as New Mexico. Also included is brief information about the people—Native Americans, Hispanics, and Anglos, the land, the economy, the government, culture that includes many artists and authors, and other notable people. The text is well-written, concise, easy to follow, and keeps the reader's attention. Full color photos, drawings, black and white photos complement the text. A timeline compares local events to those that were occurring in the United States. Additional features include a table of contents, maps, charts, a list of books for further reading, Internet sites, films and documentaries, and an index. The whole layout of the book helps to create the sense that the reader is visiting the state. It is a great addition for the classroom and school library and will assist in report writing, class projects, and/or study units. It is also an excellent choice for individuals, those who homeschool their children, and future geographers. This book is part of the "World Almanac Library of the States" series. 2003, World Almanac Library, Ages 10 up.
