Aesop's fables Book

Aesop's Fables are a classic collection of mini-stories that involve animal characters and a moral lesson. There are many famous fables such as the Hare and the Tortoise and the Boy who Cried Wolf. Each story is no longer than a page with a large illustration to accompany it. Everyone knows the fable of how the hare is so confident in beating the tortoise in a race that he decides to take a nap before finishing. The Hare oversleeps, allowing the tortoise to catch up and beat the Hare. The moral is not to be overconfident and slow and steady wins the race.
KS1-2
Even though the Fables are quite short the moral nature of them makes it possible to use higher-order thinking in work for KS2. Children can try to guess the morals or even write their own fables. They can guess what the characters are feeling and even act it out. Looking at characterisation may be useful. For younger children the general plot can be explored and the moral discussed, KS1 would be more suited to acting out the fable. For KS2 the question of why animals are made like humans in literature can be discussed.
