It's hard to think of a title that would be more apt. Pen Browning, the son of Robert and Elizabeth, about whom Maisie Ward has written so comprehensively and to such acclaim, was a first class shot and a firs-class oarsman; he triumphed at billiards and coxed his college boat at Oxford; and he had a quite considerable talent as a painter, clearly evidenced in the fourteen portraits and the bust he made of his father and by that fact that Rodin accepted him as a pupil. But, alas, like many a son of a famous father, Pen though praised and popular, wound up a failure, running up debts ( to be paid by his father) and running through money ( that of his American wife) . He purchased his parents' home , Casa Guidi, in Florence and there gathered together every relic of his mother and father the could lay his hands on. But sadly even that went awry for Pen; at this death no will could be found, everything was sold, and the proceeds were divided among his wife and cousins.
