This is a great introduction to the Ignatian Examen, especially for a Protestant such as myself. It saddens me that our tradition has lost so much of the richness of our faith because of our carte blanche rejection of Roman Catholic tradition. I digress.
The Examen is a practice of prayer consisting of five steps, sandwiched between moments of becoming aware of Gods loving presence. These steps are (in brief):
Gratitude for the day
Petition for strength to to the Examen
Review of the day
Forgiveness for sins
Renewal for the day to come
The Examen should be, ideally, undertaken under the supervision of a spiritual director. The book also introduces the helpful categories of spiritual consolation and spiritual desolation to categorize various moments of the day.
The point of the Examen is to grow in ones awareness of the Divine Will through each moment of the day.
