Gr 4-7-Each book looks at its subject's childhood and education, and then focuses on her career, contribution to her chosen field, and legacy. Several overriding themes come through in these titles, including the qualities and actions that seem to have led to the success of these women. Tenacity, a drive to follow one's dreams, being passionate about a chosen career, and maintaining interests outside of work are highlighted. Overall, the quality of the writing is inconsistent, but the books are well designed and present the information in a digestible and attractive format. Print is fairly large, all three books have color and black-and-white photos, and lots of extra information is included. In Apgar, for instance, there is an insert on the March of Dimes, an explanation of the Apgar score, and a detailed definition of anesthesiology. El test de Apgar es un examen clÃnico de neonatologÃa, tocologÃa, empleado útilmente en ginecobstetricia y en la recepción pediátrica, en donde el médico clÃnico pediatra, neonatologo o matrona certificado realiza una prueba medida en 3 estándares sobre el recién nacido para obtener una primera valoración simple (macroscópica), y clÃnica sobre el estado general del neonato después del parto. Este test lleva el nombre por Virginia Apgar, anestesióloga, especializada en obstetricia, quien ideó el examen en 1952 en el Columbia University´s Babies Hospital.
El recién nacido es evaluado de acuerdo a cinco parámetros fisioanatómicos simples, que son:
Color de la piel.
Frecuencia cardiaca.
Reflejos.
Tono muscular.
Respiración.
A cada parámetro se le asigna una puntuación entre 0 y 2, sumando las cinco puntuaciones se obtiene el resultado del test.
El test se realiza al minuto, a los cinco minutos y, en ocasiones, a los diez minutos de nacer. La puntuación al primer minuto evalúa el nivel de tolerancia del recién nacido al proceso del nacimiento y su posible sufrimiento, mientras que la puntuación obtenida a los 5 minutos evalúa el nivel de adaptabilidad del recién nacido al medio ambiente y su capacidad de recuperación. Un recién nacido con una puntuación mas baja al primer minuto que al quinto, obtiene unos resultados normales y no implica anormalidad en su evolución.
Gracias a este método, y durante los más de 50 años que lleva realizándose, se ha logrado reducir la tasa de mortalidad y la tasa de morbilidad, al evaluar el estado del bebé inmediatamente después de nacer. Se pueden valorar mediante esta prueba, a embarazos no controlados, determinaciones sobre ciertos sÃndromes y/o signos patológicos con los cuáles se haya malformado el producto, y que pueda presentar diversas fisiopatologÃas o alteraciones. El APGAR es un dato vitalicio para la Salud Pública Infantil.
