Although this scholarly work is aimed fairly narrowly at public history professionals and their students, the writing is clear and virtually free of jargon; at least some portions are even suitable as a guidebook for educated visitors to Prague. American academics will probably be struck by how differently competition for "sacred space" has been handled in the United States and the Czech Republic and especially how in Czechoslovakia public religion was so closely tied to actual religion that (for instance) during the state funeral of Klement Gottwald, the nation's first Communist leader, singers performed the Hussite Chorale "You who are God's warriors."
