Introduces the life of the "people's president," who spent his childhood on the frontier, his youth as a military hero, and his adulthood as a lawyer, judge, and politician.
Growing up on the frontier in western North Carolina was a hard for Andrew and his family. When his father died he and his brothers went to live with their aunt. Andrew did not really like school but he loved to read. Many of the townspeople could not read, and they would come to have Andrew to read the news to them. As a result, he was well-informed about current events. This was during the time of the American Revolution and he was eager to join the fight for independence from Britain. After he returned from the war he drifted for a while, unsure of what he wanted to do. He eventually became a lawyer and worked as a prosecutor in the western district which eventually became Tennessee. He was elected to the House of Representatives of the U. S. Congress, returned to the military during the war of 1812 and eventually became the 7th President of the United States. The illustrations are unattractive and not pleasing to the eye. This title is part of the "History Makers Bios" series. 2005, Lerner Publications Company, Ages 7 to 10.
