I was cast in this play several years ago, before it was officially published. I just bought the published edition and read it, and it reminded me how incredibly powerful this work is.
Kyle is an astronomer, whose wife (we find out over the course of his opening monologue) was kidnapped, raped, and murdered. As he comes to terms with this, we learn about some of the other people in his life: Benny, his best friend since childhood; Serena, his sister-in-law, who is also struggling with her own grief; and Kathleen, a prostitute he repeatedly visits in order to "feel" something again.
Kyle retreats into himself, coldly observing distant stars when strong emotions become too much for him to handle. Through the course of the play, we see him begin re-engaging with the outside world and finds a certain measure of peace.
