Mallarmé (1842-98) has been much studied for his ideas about language, but Williams (French, U. of Wales-Aberystwyth) looks rather at how he uses language to convey ideas about other things. She says he was as concerned with concepts or ideas as with language as it behaves within the constraints of poetic convention, and her concern is with how he integrated the two. The study began as her Ph.D. dissertation, perhaps at Oxford University. It is not indexed. Annotation ©2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
