Novak combines historical and literary approaches to explore the transformations in Canadian war fiction between 1915 and 1977. Beginning with World War One fiction, she shows how Canadian writers used the romance genre both to justify and to glorify the actions of the Canadian soldier in combat. She then traces the change from jingoism to stark realism. Even in a recent novel about World War One, she finds, through ironic, is tinged with elements of romance. Her account began as a Ph.D. dissertation for the University of Toronto. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
