This special paper reinterprets onshore and offshore geologic mapping, examines a key offshore well core, and revises cross-fault ties to indicate a Neogene dextral strike dip of substantial size along the San Gregorio-Hosgri fault zone, a major strand of the San Andreas transform system in coastal California. The paper describes the full course of the fault, defining the net slip across it, and shows its relationship to other major tectonic features of central California, helping to clarify the evolution of the San Andreas system. Topics include the slip rate over time, the course of the fault, the offset Nacimiento fault and its piercing points, tectonic reconstructions, regional problems and intra-Salinian deformation.
