Midnight Louie's pet detectives Book

An assortment of stories featuring animals as crimesolvers, most by authors I've not read before. None of the stories were super-cheesy and unrealistic, but none were OMG awesome either. In some cases, I felt like if the stories were a 5 chapter book, we got chapters 1,2, and 5 where there was lots of background on the mystery, then all of a sudden it was solved, as if chapters 3 and 4 were condensed into a few sentences at the end rather than taking readers through in chronological order. Others bordered on the dry side, that it took me multiple nights before bed to get through a single short story because it kept putting me to sleep.
I appreciated that Douglas, the editor, provided background on each of the authors and their work, told from the perspective of her titular feline, Midnight Louie. Some authors don't generally write fauna-centric pieces, while others like Douglas and Lilian Jackson Braun (one of the few in the anthology whose work I was familiar with) are known for their animal mysteries. I do think Douglas' story was my favorite and I would likely read more of her Midnight Louie works.
All in all, a nice introduction to a variety of authors. Hard to say who, other than Douglas, merits further reading, but I may return to this volume for a refresher should I come across one of the other authors' other works.
