Counting and learning numbers one through twelve are introduced and illustrated, even overrun, by the antics of the children in this very lively sequence of scenes from a classroom, a garden and fields outside the classroom, a visit to a farm, and a music lesson. A two-page spread introduces the number one, along with the classroom teacher and her quirky assortment of students. Each number in the sequence is illustrated on its own two-page spread with text presenting the new number, and a review of the preceding numbers in a jingle adapted from "The Twelve Days of Christmas," a count-down form of repetition that reinforces learning. The illustrations are full of color, whimsy and at times absurd details that will delight children. The numbers are printed as words and numerals as well as represented in illustrations associated with the number. The last page of the book includes a note from the artist and identifying information for the flags used to illustrate the number twelve.
