These are amazing plays that Americans need to read more often. Gambaro is writing about the Dirty War in Argentina in amazing, real, jarring, ways that implicate the audience as complicit in their viewing of injustice and atrocity and their lack of action. The strength and courage of those who fight against military regimes, but also how they can pay with their lives. The helplessness of the victim, but also their unwillingness to accept exactly how bad the situation is until it's too late.
It was also refreshing to read something not by a white male westerner.
There's also a fantastic essay in the back of this book about her plays.
