The book contains definitions of realism and naturalism based on representative novels of the period ranging from Howells' Rise of Silas Lapham to Crane's Red Badge of Courage; analyses of the literary criticism of the age, stressing that of Howells, Garland, and Norris; and close readings of specific works by major figures of the period.

Realism and naturalism in nineteenth-century American literature
Pepper's Journal by Stuart J. Murphy is a great book to teach students about calendar. In the book, the main character lists the days in the year while she monitors her kitten's growth. The book introduces concepts of calendar such as: days, weeks, month, and years. Students can also use this book to learn about the different holidays or seasons in a year. I would use this book for students in Pre-K-2nd grade.
