Four of the major treatises of the fourteenth century Flemish mystic in contemporary English translation.
Ruusbroec is a 14th-century Flemish mystic especially noted for his Trinitarian theology, for whom the contemplative life always involves activity or going out, just as God is always dynamic. Thus, his view of the mystic's life is not a progression of stages as much as it is simultaneous activity, return, and rest. For this reason, he seems to many contemporary readers more modern than medieval mystics whose vision was hierarchical. Wiseman provides a dynamic rather than literal translation of four treatises (those in the title together with A Mirror of Eternal Blessedness and the Little Book of Clarification . Recommended for academic and seminary libraries. Carolyn M. Craft, English, Philosophy & Foreign Languages Dept., Longwood Coll., Farmville, Va.
