The Essential Lincoln: Speeches and Correspondence
More reading for The History Book Club that I belong to. It was difficult to read oratory in written form, so long after it had fired up feelings associated with it. But I was struck by two things, how some of the political rhetoric around marriage equality follows that of slavery. In one of speeches Lincoln dings his opponent by saying that perhaps his esteemed opponent needs a law to prevent him from marrying a Negro, but he himself needs no such law to remember not to do that.
I noticed that the tone of this speeches changed to favor emancipation boldly towards the end of his second term, and I do not know if that reflected a true change of opinion (which I would like to believe) or clever political manipulation.
